Star Wars: The Force Awakens Review
Please read this article only if you have seen the movie, I hate spoilers so I don’t want to ruin the movie for you.
Last night I watched “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” movie and I still have mixed feelings about it. Maybe after writing this review I’ll have a better or worst rating, but so far I’ll give it 8/10. I am a Star Wars fan, but I’m not the guy with all sorts of Star Wars toys and clothes, lightsabers, etc, so I’m not the biggest fan out there. I’ve seen all the movies 2-3 times, and my favorite is Revenge of the Sith.
Not a kids only movie
When Lucasfilm was bought by Disney, I(and probably a lot of you) thought that the movie will have cute monsters for kids to watch and it will be something like the first movie, with a silly Jar Jar Binks character that makes only the children laugh. But this wasn’t the case, I think the movie had a nice plot and the action was great.
Some scenes were pretty funny, and I think it was ok to have them in the movie.
Everyone was happy to see Han Solo and Chewbacca again, and we hoped to see Luke in the movie despite the fact that we haven’t saw him in the trailer. I also liked that the movie wasn’t focused only on them, we have new actors which are pretty interesting.
I like her, the Force is strong in her and I like how she played her part. I’m sure we’ll learn more about her parents in the next movies, but I hope they won’t turn this into a soap opera by revealing all sorts of family relationships between the characters.
When the movie started, I thought Kylo Ren was a real badass, even more than Darth Vader. The way he stopped that laser shot was awesome, and I don’t think I ever saw a Jedi/Sith do it, so my immediate impression was that he was the strongest character that we’ve seen.
Ok, at first he seems to be a real badass, but half of the cinema laughed when he revealed his face. I mean he was not threatening at all. Starting with that moment and when I found out he is Han Solo’s child, I thought of him like being a spoiled brat, who just needs a good spanking from his parents. I immediately started to relate him to Joffrey from Game of Thrones, and I think some of you will agree with me. He is spoiled, he wants to be as strong as his grandfather but at the end of the movie we see him get beaten by a stormtrooper(Finn) and a girl(Rey) who have no Jedi training. Anakin killed all the padawans from the Jedi temple and they had more training than Finn and Rey combined, and that wasn’t the strongest form of Anakin. So now I think he isn’t strong at all, but I hope his Sith master will be a better fighter when Luke arrives.
In the last few days I really tried to avoid spoilers, but when there were just a few hours of the movie I was reading some article totally unrelated to Star Wars and in the comments section someone wrote this: “Kylo Ren is Anakin’s father”. I was a bit angry because the idea is very cool, much cooler than Kylo Ren being Anakin’s grandchild, but it was still a spoiler and I hoped that it wasn’t true. Then the movie started, and Kylo Ren seem to be a real badass, stopping lasers in the air, and then I thought that Anakin’s father is very powerful, much powerful than him ever was. When I found out who Kylo Ren really is, I was a bit relieved that the spoiler wasn’t true, but most of all I felt disappointed.
Yes, I like the actor and the character, but I don’t understand how she becomes so powerful in a short amount of time. In the battle between Rey and Kylo Ren, when Rey starts to become more powerful and almost kills him, I thought for a moment that I was watching Matrix, when Neo starts believing he was the chosen one and becomes faster and powerful. I also remember that scene where she escaped by using the Force to control the stormtrooper’s mind, it was funny, but how was it possible? I thought Jedi’s need years of training to do that, and the new stormtroopers were supposed to be better than the clones. Don’t get me wrong, I like how powerful she became, but after watching all the Star Wars films, it doesn’t seem very plausible.
So we have a droid with top-secret information which seeks to deliver them to a person, and he is helped by some people to do it, on board of The Millennium Falcon with Han Solo and Chewie. The Empire has a weapon that can destroy planets, and actually does that. By the end of the movie an important character dies, and the Empire’s weapon is destroyed by a skilled fighter. Do you see what I’m trying to say here? It’s mostly the same story from the first Star Wars movie(Episode 3, A New Hope). This doesn’t mean that the movie wasn’t good, but I would have expected a different story. The episodes 1, 2 and 3 had to show the story of Anakin, and in the end he had to become Darth Vader, so you couldn’t change that, but now the writers had the chance to write something new, and they chose to give us a slightly different version of Episode 4. I’m a disappointed by that, but I hope the next two movies won’t have furry little creatures and Kylo Ren coming back to the light side of the Force.
When I started writing the article, I gave it 8/10, now I think I’ll rate it 7.5/10 but just because I have seen the other Star Wars movies. If this was a new movie for me, I would rate it a solid 9/10.
